Course Description: Because many companion pet exotic animals are prey species, they hide their signs of illness to avoid predation. As such, most exotic species presenting on an emergency basis have significant underlying disease. This lab will cover techniques utilized with pet exotic species (avian, small mammal, and reptile) on an emergent basis. Stations for nasogastric and orogastric tube placement in small mammal species, crop gavage technique in avian species, and esophageal feeding tube placement in reptiles will be available. A bandage station for figure-of-eight bandage and tape splint placement in avian species. IO catheter placement in avian, small mammal, and reptile species will be included. Airway emergency techniques covered include intubation, forced mask ventilation, v-gel placement, and air sac tube insertion.

Course Description: Learn how to maximize the changes of patient survival by training on the simulator and completing the RECOVER CPR Basic Life Support (BLS) & Advanced Life Support (ALS) Rescuer Certification! Through the efforts of over 100 veterinary specialists, an evidence-based veterinary CPR guidelines was created and made available. The RECOVER initiative directs its efforts at regularly updating the clinical guidelines, providing effective training and certification in a standardized method of performing veterinary CPR, and guiding research in veterinary resuscitation. This course will review key concepts and provide practical training using simulated scenarios of BLS. The ALS training is conducted with veterinary-specific simulation software coupled with a high-fidelity canine simulator mannequin. Completiong of the Rescuer BLS/ALS live-training modules takes approximately 6 hours with an assessment simulation included at the conclusion of the hands-on workshop. The lectures are scheduled Friday before the workshop. Additional instruction regarding the US-guided skills listed will occur during the workshop.
Course Description: The workshop will cover US-guided fine needle aspiration/needle biopsy; US-guided abdominocentesis, thoracocentesis, and pericardiocentesis; and US-guided vascular access (placement of intravenous catheters). Course Description: The hands on workshop covers image acquisition of AFAST®, TFAST® and Vet BLUE® combined as a single ultrasound exam called Global FAST® led by Dr. Greg Lisciandro, DVM, DABVP, DACVECC. The attendee will gain experience in imaging the abdomen (AFAST®), and thorax including echocardiography (TFAST®) and lung (Vet BLUE®). Lectures will be required for this workshop and will include AFAST®, its fluid scoring system, volume status via the caudal vena cava, and a focused spleen exam; TFAST® use for the diagnosis of pericardial and pleural effusion, pneumothorax, and echocardiography; and Vet BLUE®, its regional, pattern-based approach, wet versus dry lung, its B-line scoring system, and its signs of consolidation, Shred Sign, Tissue Sign, Nodule Sign, and Wedge Sign. The prerequisite courses will be practical and case-based with many clinical examples.
